Are you contemplating hiring a SEO company for handling your website’s promotion? How do you know that the consultant you hire will do the best job possible? Are you sure that you are not attracted by his/her rock bottom prices and too-good-to-be-true promises rather than credentials or portfolio?

The rapid growth of SEO industry has spawned many SEO consultants and companies almost overnight. SEO is an elaborate process which takes months of consistent work, both on and off the website. As much as it is aimed at search engines, it is equally important for the overall usability and user experience of the website. I am sure that my last sentence must have spooked you. How is SEO related to usability? SEO consists of on page optimization and off page optimization. On page optimization means how to make a website, search engine and user friendly. When Google publishes its SEO recommendations, they are just not for the benefit of their search crawlers but also for users of the site. You can bet that when you interview the SEO consultant during the hiring process and ask him about the link between SEO and usability, he will be stumped.

Any SEO campaign should start with on page optimization which is mainly about what the site is all about. A good SEO consultant makes sure that each page of the website should explain what it is about with the use of keywords and phrases in the title, Meta tags, content and other tags.  

The other part of SEO is off page optimization. This involves making sure that the internet is talking about you. In the real world you know that you are popular when you are all over newspapers, TV and radio. Similarly, on internet if other websites mention your website and link back then it means your website is popular. When websites link back to your website, it is considered as a vote for you. This vote is highly valued by search engines and is factored in while calculating a website’s ranking in search results. On page optimization is all about making other websites link back to you. This can be done in many ways which are behind the scope of this article.

A website owner should ask any SEO company on how they will go about these two activities and their timelines. Success in these two activities will decide if your SEO campaign gets you the desired results or not.

I was in the same situation for you where I needed to learn SEO for one of my websites and one of the most helpful ways I found was to just to on youtube and view the tutorials by someone of the experts and ordinary people like us, I learnt quite a few good tips.
